Problem statement: Professors and lecturers, or more generally teachers, are preparing their lecture isolated from other teachers and students. This way experience and know-how of others cannot be used to enhance lectures. This includes the only possibility of students’ feedback is on the finished lecture through the semester evaluation.

Proposed solution: A new interaction between teachers and students to develop teaching together. A two tiered process: The first step is a matchmaking event to bring interested teachers and students together to work teaching together. In small round-table sessions interested organized along teaching projects or issues, interested students and teachers could discuss a variety of aspects related to teaching. It would also serve to promote and discuss innovative teaching practices and spark ideas for future collaborations. In a plenary session innovative teaching projects from ETH Zürich or other universities are showcased and presented.

The second step is a teaching lab, a student-project-house like space for teaching. Here teachers and students can further develop projects from the first step. The teaching lab is very flexible and scalable, that can be adapted to the projects and groups. It is interfaced with and supported by facilitators from LET and existing teaching initiatives. Project eventually could find translation into actual teaching and for instance to Innovedum applications.

Next steps: Our survey has shown concrete interest of several stakeholders, including professors and people related to teaching development. It would be purposeful to extend the survey to a broader audience. The survey and interviews would clarify the need for such a project. A possible next step would be the planning of the first step above the teaching event. Depending on the response a teaching lab could be planned for selected projects.
